Radio Marsden

Hospital radio serving the patients of the Royal Marsden Hospitals in Sutton & Chelsea

Producer & Presenter - The Zone

Aug 2019 to Oct 2020

This write-up I compiled about The Zone radio show was featured in the Royal Marsden Hospital Magazine:

The Zone is Radio Marsden’s specialist music show dedicated to the station’s younger listeners. The show airs every Saturday between 12-2pm, and is produced and presented by Reshma Biring, Isabella Thompson and Megan Maloney. Since the show started in August 2019, the team have been bringing listeners a weekly mix of current music from a range of genres together with talk around subjects that connect with a younger audience.

It’s not uncommon for the team to delve into conversations or quizzes around the world of celebrity news, current affairs, fashion, what’s hot on TV or the movies they are currently watching. But the team are also conscious to touch base on topics that help champion positivity, such as self-expression, wellbeing and good deeds. “Starting my Radio Marsden journey on The Request Show showed me how important the shows are for the hospital and the positive impact they can have on patients,” says Megan. “Now, I enjoy creating new content and ideas for The Zone every week and thinking of how to make the show as fun and engaging as possible for young people my age.”

Being in the studio is also a very happy place for the team: “It’s where I can express myself,” explains Isabella. “It makes it even better knowing that young listeners can find escapism, relatability or just plain enjoyment when listening in.” Some of the highlights for the team so far include The Zone’s first Christmas special and having Radio Marsden alumnus, now Capital FM presenter, Dave Goodings appear on the show to celebrate the station’s 50th anniversary. “Having Dave join us on The Zone was definitely a highlight for me,” says Reshma. “Not only was it super fun interviewing Dave and hearing about his amazing career in radio, but it was also really exciting being filmed for an ITV news story about the station’s 50’s anniversary.”

The team hope to continue growing The Zone from strength to strength. Reshma, Isabella and Megan would love to engage the children’s and youth wards at the Royal Marsden and invite some of the patients to take part in the show.

Equipment / software used: Myriad, Adobe Audition, studio desk and Cleanfeed for recording the show remotely. I also supported and mentored the younger members of the team.
